At Walkabout Films, storytelling has always gone beyond the screen. It has been about connection, responsibility, and giving back to the communities that make our stories possible. As part of this ongoing commitment to public education and national awareness, Walkabout Films has proudly partnered with Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation and the management of Khewra Salt Mine to develop a dedicated educational media chamber inside one of Pakistan’s most iconic natural landmarks.

This initiative, titled the Give Back Project, reflects a shared vision to transform one of the world’s largest salt mines into not only a site of historical and industrial importance but also a living classroom for future generations.

Scheduled to become fully operational in early 2026, the Khewra Media Chamber will offer visitors a powerful cinematic experience through a permanently installed screening system showcasing educational films about the salt mines and the rich wildlife of Pakistan.

A Landmark Location for National Learning

Khewra Salt Mine is not just a mineral extraction site; it is a symbol of Pakistan’s natural wealth, geological history, and industrial legacy. Spread across vast underground chambers and tunnels carved from ancient salt deposits, the mine attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from across Pakistan and around the world.

Despite this footfall, accessible, high-quality educational content within the mine itself has long been a missing piece. Visitors could see the formations, but often left without a deeper context about how the mines operate, how salt is formed, or how Pakistan’s wildlife ecosystems connect to its mineral and environmental heritage.

The media chamber aims to change that.

By integrating film, sound, and digital storytelling inside the mine, visitors will now be able to experience curated educational screenings that explain:

  • The geological history of the salt deposits
  • Mining techniques used across generations
  • The economic importance of salt to Pakistan
  • The diversity of wildlife and ecosystems across the country

This transforms a simple visit into a fully immersive educational journey.

Walkabout Films’ Contribution, Technology for Public Good

As part of this joint initiative, Walkabout Films is providing both the screening equipment and the educational media content completely free of charge. This includes:

  • A full cinema-grade projection system
  • Audio equipment designed for underground acoustics
  • A curated library of educational films
  • Visual content developed specifically for school groups and tourists

This contribution reflects Walkabout Films’ philosophy that powerful media should not be limited to commercial platforms alone. When used responsibly, film can become one of the strongest tools for public education, heritage preservation, and environmental awareness.

By offering this technology gratis, Walkabout Films ensures that visitors from every background can access professionally produced educational content without barriers or cost.

Partnership with PMDC and Khewra Management

This project would not be possible without the collaboration and support of Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation and the dedicated management team at Khewra Salt Mine.

PMDC’s stewardship of Pakistan’s mineral resources has always included a responsibility toward public engagement and education. By supporting the creation of this media chamber, PMDC is reinforcing the idea that mineral development and public learning can grow side by side.

Walkabout Films acknowledges and sincerely thanks PMDC and the Khewra management for their trust, facilitation, and long-term vision for visitor engagement at this historic site.

Educational Films with a National Purpose

The films curated for the chamber focus on two main themes:

1. The Story of the Mines

Visitors will be able to see how ancient salt deposits formed millions of years ago, how mining evolved from manual extraction to modern industrial methods, and how Khewra remains a critical contributor to Pakistan’s mineral economy today.

These films aim to simplify complex geological and industrial processes into engaging narratives that are suitable for students, families, and international tourists alike.

2. Wildlife and Ecosystems of Pakistan

The second segment highlights Pakistan’s extraordinary biodiversity, from mountain ecosystems to deserts, forests, wetlands, and coastlines. Many visitors may never get the opportunity to explore these landscapes physically, but through film, they will be able to witness the interconnectedness between land, minerals, water, and wildlife.

This wildlife focus also supports environmental responsibility by promoting conservation awareness among younger audiences.

A Chamber Designed for Experience, Not Just Viewing

This is not a standard screening room. The chamber is being specially adapted to the underground environment of the salt mine. From sound calibration to light control and seating comfort, each element is being planned to ensure that visitors can fully absorb the experience in a safe and engaging setting.

The objective is not simply to show films, but to create an atmosphere where learning feels immersive, reflective, and memorable.

Why This Project Matters

At a time when digital consumption often feels disconnected from physical spaces, this project brings media back into direct contact with the environment and place. Students who walk through the mines will not only see salt walls and tunnels, but they will also understand what they represent. Families will not just visit as tourists; they will leave informed about Pakistan’s geological history and natural wealth.

This is the true essence of the Give Back Project. To convert access into understanding, and visits into learning.

Supporting Tourism Through Education

The Khewra Media Chamber also strengthens Pakistan’s tourism narrative. Educational tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments globally, and initiatives like this position Pakistan as a country that values knowledge-driven travel experiences.

School trips, university tours, international visitors, and documentary researchers now have an additional layer of engagement that extends beyond photography and sightseeing.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With technical preparations underway and content development in progress, Walkabout Films and PMDC aim to have the chamber fully operational by early 2026. Once live, it will stand as a permanent contribution to Pakistan’s public education landscape and a model for how private creative studios and public institutions can collaborate for social good.

This chamber will continue to screen educational films for years to come, long after production cycles end and equipment models evolve. That is the lasting impact Walkabout Films hopes to create, not just stories that travel across screens, but knowledge that stays with people.

A Shared Vision for Pakistan’s Story

Pakistan holds countless stories beneath its surface. Some in mountains, some in rivers, some in culture, and some deep inside the earth itself. The Khewra Salt Mine Media Chamber is one such story, where geology meets cinema, and heritage meets education.

Walkabout Films remains committed to using its craft, technology, and global storytelling experience to serve Pakistan in meaningful ways. This project is one step in that journey.

We look forward to welcoming students, tourists, and explorers into this new chapter beneath the salt walls of Khewra.
